What is Rybelsus?

Rybelsus (semaglutide) is a tablet used for improving blood sugar levels in adults suffering from type 2 diabetes. It belongs to the class of glucagon-like peptide-1 agonists (GLP-1).

It works by mimicking the functions of incretin hormones that are found in the body naturally. Incretins are a group of metabolic hormones that stimulate a decrease in blood glucose levels [1]. They are released after eating and stimulate insulin secretion together with hyperglycemia (high blood sugar).

What is Rybelsus used for?

It works by increasing the level of insulin released and decreasing glucagon secretion. It also slows down gastric emptying after eating. Rybelsus has the same active ingredient as Wegovy and Ozempic. Therefore, Rybelsus tablets could be used for weight loss.

Is Rybelsus used for treating type 1 diabetes?

Rybelsus is not for treating type 1 diabetes. In animal studies, it’s been reported that Semaglutide causes thyroid tumors or cancer. It is not known whether these effects would occur in people.

But there’s still a chance that semaglutide can cause health complications. In a 2022 report, the correlation between semaglutide and thyroid cancer for those who did or didn’t take was recorded. In that report, it was found higher rates of thyroid cancer in people who used semaglutide for 1-3 years [2].

If patients have a personal or family history of thyroid cancer, using semaglutide is not recommended for them.

Is Ozempic and Rybelsus the same?

Rybelsus and Ozempic are both prescription drugs that contain the active drug semaglutide. But they are not the same drug. Rybelsus is an oral tablet used to treat type 2 diabetes in adults, while Ozempic is found in injection form and used to treat type 2 diabetes in adults.

Is Rybelsus better than Ozempic for weight loss?

Although both of them contain semaglutide, they have some differences. Rybelsus is found in tablets, while Ozempic as injections.

Is Rybelsus better than Ozempic for weight loss

Studies found that patients with type 2 diabetes who took 1.0 mg of semaglutide injection (Ozempic) reduced body weight by an average of 4.5 kg compared to patients who lost 3.7 kg with 14 mg of semaglutide tablet (Rybelsus) [3].

Therefore, Ozempic is slightly better for weight loss.

Can you take Rybelsus if you are not diabetic?

Rybelsus is not approved for non-diabetic use. However, it’s been studied for its potential to aid weight loss in non-diabetic patients. But the safety and efficacy of Rybelsus hasn’t been established yet.

Therefore, we advise you to consult your doctor first before considering Rybelsus.

Is Rybelsus insulin?

No, Rybelsus is not insulin. It is a once-daily tablet used to improve blood sugar control in adults with type 2 diabetes.

How is Rybelsus taken?

According to Novomedlink, Rybelsus is taken as a once-daily tablet on an empty stomach when you first wake up with a sip of plain water (no more than 4 ounces). It is important to wait 30 minutes before eating, drinking, or taking other oral medications.

After 30 minutes, you can eat, drink, or take other oral medications, vitamins, or supplements. Please note that, Rybelsus should be swallowed whole and not split, crushed, or chewed

Can pregnant or breastfeeding women use Rybelsus?

There’s not much evidence that shows that Rybelsus is harmful to pregnant or breastfeeding women. If you are pregnant and also have poorly managed diabetes then it might be harmful to use Rybelsus for your health.

Is Rybelsus better than metformin?

Metformin is the preferable choice as a medication for treating type 2 diabetes. Rybelsus is a newer type of medication that can help with treating type 2 diabetes. Metformin works by improving insulin regulation and lowering blood sugar levels. Rybelsus increases the amount of insulin your body releases and slows gastric emptying, which keeps you full.

Why is Rybelsus so expensive?

Rybelsus is expensive because of the extensive research, production, and manufacturing costs, and their efficacy in controlling blood sugar levels and weight management in type 2 diabetic patients.
