Over the period of twenty-two weeks, participants either took low doses of the extract supplements, extract supplements at a higher dosage or placebos. Throughout the study, participants did not change their exercise regimens or eating habits. During the study the participants lost 17 pounds on average equaling a total body weight loss of about 10 percent. Participants also saw a 16 percent decrease in total body fat. The participants’ average daily caloric intake was roughly around 2,400 calorie. Through exercise, an average of 400 calories was burned. This calorie level alone would not result in the dramatic weight loss that was observed with the extract. Scientists suggest that the favorable effects of green coffee bean extracts can be attributed to their chlorogenic acid. Due to the fact that, roasted coffee beans are broken down during the roasting process, chlorogenic acid isn’t present in roasted coffee beans. According to the study’s lead researcher, no negative side effects were observed from taking the green coffee bean extract capsules.
