One of the most popular diets over the years is the Atkins Diet. The Atkins Diet was created by Dr. Richard Atkins. The Atkins Diet is also known as a four stage carbohydrate diet. By decreasing the amount of carbohydrates you intake, it adjusts your metabolism. When this occurs, the body goes into ketosis, it means that the body’s metabolism is burning from glucose to burning body fat. This occurs because the body has run out of excess carbohydrates to burn and utilize as energy. The main focus of the Atkins diet is to stop eating carbohydrates and the body will begin to burn up your body’s fat as a source of energy.
During the first fourteen days of the Atkins Diet, you are restricted to intake only 20 grams of carbohydrates. You do this so you can kick start the body into the movement of burning fat from your body comparatively than burning the food you eat. At this stage, many fruits and vegetables are off limits.
“Ongoing Weight Loss” (OWL) is a phase that occurs during the Atkins Diet. During this phase, you can moderately increase the amount of carbohydrates you intake by 5 grams a day. You would still need to watch your carbohydrate intake until you find the perfect amount of carbohydrates that allows you to lose atleast 1 to 2 pounds per week. This is called your Critical Carbohydrate Level. At this stage, some examples of the food you eat can be some low carbohydrate vegetables and dairy products.
The “Premaintenance Phase” of the Atkins Diet occurs when you lose 5 to 10 pounds of the ideal weight you want to lose. The “Maintenance Phase” occurs when you have hit your ideal weight and have established the maximum level of carbohydrates at which you can easily maintain. When in this stage, you can add good carbohydrates that are unprocessed or partially unprocessed like fruits, vegetables, seeds and nuts.
